THE LOCAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

The Moffatt-Ladd House sits on land known as Spring Hill, across from the mighty Piscataqua River.  It is part of the traditional homeland of the Abenaki people. The river has some if the strongest tides in North America and its name is an indigenous name that is a combination of the words "peske"(branch) and "tegwe" (a river with a strong current). It forms part of the border between New Hampshire and Maine and was the life blood of the native people who lived here.  We acknowledge and honor these people and their contribution to human history and our local waterways.
